Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.- The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
- The submission file is in PDF document file format. A Microsoft Word document will be required upon article acceptance.
- It is important to ensure that you send 2 files - 1 with a complete paper and abstract but contains NO author information or names, and a separate file that contains author names and information. This will ensure that we can then send the paper to reviewers as a blind copy
- Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
- Please add the key words, any designation, and info about the authors (including contact info) after the abstract. The text is single-spaced with double spacing between paragraphs; uses a 10-point font; and all illustrations, figures (with titles below), and tables (with titles above) are embedded within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end. The Introduction will be numbered 1 with the Conclusion the last number. The References will be numbered (no brackets around these), in alphabetical order and double-spaced between each reference. Please do not paginate your article. Thank you.

Special Issue: Renewable Energy
1. Overview
The Energy Studies Review (ESR) invites submissions for its Special Issue on Renewable Energy. This issue will showcase high-quality research, policy analyses, and case studies that advance understanding of renewable energy systems and their role in achieving a sustainable, low-carbon future.
The Special Issue will explore the development, integration, and application of renewable energy technologies including solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and bioenergy, as well as innovations in energy storage and smart grids. In addition to technical progress, the issue will address financial, regulatory, and social dimensions of renewable energy adoption, highlighting pathways for accelerating the global energy transition.
By bringing together diverse disciplinary perspectives, this Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive examination of opportunities, challenges, and strategies for scaling renewable energy in support of climate and sustainability goals.

How to submit to a Special Issue
Log in or Register
- Visit the ESR submission portal: https://energystudiesreview.ca
- If you already have an account, log in.
- If you are new to ESR, click “Register” and complete your profile.
Start a New Submission
Step 1: After logging in, click “New Submission”.
Step 2: Under “Section”, choose “Special Issue: …” to ensure your manuscript is routed correctly for editorial review under the designated Special Issue. Select “Article Text” if you are submitting to the journal’s regular section.
Step 3: Review and check off all items in the Submission Requirements.
- Pay close attention to the item that reads “If this submission is intended for a Special Issue, I confirm that I have selected the 'Special Issue' section and have indicated the issue in both the Comments for the Editor and the Cover Letter.”
Step 4: In the “Comments for the Editor” box, clearly state: “This manuscript is submitted for consideration in the Special Issue on [Special Issue Title].”
Step 5: Acknowledge the Copyright Statement.
- Please read the statement carefully and confirm your agreement by checking the acknowledgment box. This step is mandatory for submission to proceed.
- Click “Save and continue”.
Step 6: Upload all required components (manuscript, figures, cover letter, etc.).
- After uploading each file, choose the appropriate component types (e.g., “Article Text”, “Special Issue”, “Other”)
- Click “Other” to view the complete list of file types.
- The selected file type will appear after the filename when chosen.
- Click “Save and continue” to upload files.
Step 7: Enter metadata such as title and abstract.
- Click “Save and continue”.
Step 8: Confirmation.
- Click “Finish Submission”
- Click “Ok” on the pop-up window

Rights for Authors
As further described in our submission agreement (the Submission Agreement), in consideration for publication of the article, the authors assign to Energy Studies Review all copyright in the article, subject to the expansive personal--use exceptions described below.
Attribution and Usage Policies
Reproduction, posting, transmission or other distribution or use of the article or any material therein, in any medium as permitted by a personal-use exemption or by written agreement of Energy Studies Review, requires credit to Energy Studies Review as copyright holder (e.g., Energy Studies Review © 2014).
Personal-use Exceptions
The following uses are always permitted to the author(s) and do not require further permission from DigitalCommons@McMaster provided the author does not alter the format or content of the articles, including the copyright notification:
- Storage and back-up of the article on the author's computer(s) and digital media (e.g., diskettes, back-up servers, Zip disks, etc.), provided that the article stored on these computers and media is not readily accessible by persons other than the author(s);
- Posting of the article on the author(s) personal website, provided that the website is non-commercial;
- Posting of the article on the internet as part of a non-commercial open access institutional repository or other non-commercial open access publication site affiliated with the author(s)'s place of employment (e.g., a Phrenology professor at the University of Southern North Dakota can have her article appear in the University of Southern North Dakota's Department of Phrenology online publication series); and
